Stockton-on-Tees is a market town on the north bank of the Tees, known for its very wide high street. Housing ranges from Victorian terraces close to the centre to inter-war semis in Fairfield and Hartburn, the older village of Norton with its green and duck pond, and large modern estates in Ingleby Barwick across the river. Many older homes have narrow stairs and a step at the front door.
The town is mostly flat. The riverside paths by the Tees Barrage and the Infinity Bridge are level and popular for walking, and Ropner Park offers paths, a lake and benches. We usually start indoors with stairs and daily tasks and then move outside to the walks that matter to you, such as a trip down the high street or a loop of the park.
University Hospital of North Tees provides emergency care for the area, with many planned operations carried out at Hartlepool or James Cook University Hospital. We are independent of these hospitals and of the NHS, so please keep your discharge letter and any exercise sheets to hand when we first speak.
Stockton High Street is one of the widest in the country, with level paving, plenty of seating and a riverside park beside it, making it a natural place to practise. The town hosts the Stockton International Riverside Festival in summer, with crowds, kerbs and uneven ground worth preparing for. Preston Park Museum, just south of the town, has a recreated Victorian street, gardens and a café, with mostly level paths. Many people living in Thornaby, Billingham and Yarm use Stockton as their main town centre, and the bus routes that link them are a common goal for building independence after surgery or illness.
