Walkden is a town in the City of Salford, in the western part of Greater Manchester. It grew around coal mining, much of it owned by the Bridgewater estate, and the Earl of Ellesmere memorial stands as a reminder of that history.
The Ellesmere Shopping Centre forms the heart of the town, with shops and services. Blackleach Country Park offers lakes and level paths, while RHS Garden Bridgewater, a major garden in nearby Worsley, attracts visitors from across the region.
The Bridgewater Canal and the Roe Green Loopline, a former railway path, provide flat routes for walking. Little Hulton and Ellenbrook have their own shops and communities.
Homes include terraced houses, inter-war semis, post-war estates and modern developments in Ellenbrook and Boothstown. Many have stairs.
NHS Greater Manchester Integrated Care Board commissions care. Walkden patients are usually treated at Salford Royal, and we provide private physiotherapy at home following discharge.
Walkden station has trains to Manchester and Wigan. Goals include walking to the Ellesmere Centre, visiting RHS Bridgewater or using the Loopline.
The Walkden Gateway health and leisure building, Worsley Road shops and the green at Ellenbrook are other common targets, and the Roe Green Loopline gives a traffic-free route towards Worsley village and the orange-tinted waters of the Bridgewater Canal. Blackleach reservoir has benches at regular points, which makes it easier to plan rest stops on early outdoor walks.
