Westhoughton is a town in the borough of Bolton in Greater Manchester, between Bolton and Wigan. It is known for the Pretoria Pit disaster of 1910, when an explosion killed 344 men and boys, one of the worst mining disasters in British history. A memorial in the town remembers them, and many local families still have connections to the tragedy.
In 1812 Luddites burned down Westhoughton Mill, a power loom factory, and several were hanged as a result. The town is also known for Westhoughton Wakes and for Keaw Yed Sunday, linked to a local legend about a cow with its head stuck in a gate. Market Street holds most of the shops and cafés.
Housing includes Victorian terraces, inter-war semis and sizeable modern estates spread across Daisy Hill, Wingates and Chequerbent. Green space comes from the Hart Common fields and the Hulton Park area, and the Wingates band is one of the best-known brass bands in Britain.
NHS Greater Manchester Integrated Care Board plans local services, and Westhoughton patients are usually treated at the Royal Bolton Hospital. Our private home physiotherapy continues their rehabilitation once they return home.
Westhoughton and Daisy Hill stations have trains to Manchester, Bolton and Wigan. Patients often hope to walk down Market Street, enjoy the green spaces or take the train again.
Westhoughton people are proudly known as Keaw Yeds, and the town's wakes still celebrate the nickname with a pie and cow's-head tradition. Its history includes the burning of Westhoughton Mill by Luddites in 1812 and the Pretoria Pit disaster of 1910, when 344 men and boys died at Over Hulton. Each neighbourhood, from Hart Common to Four Gates or Daisy Hill, keeps its own identity, while the memorial park off Central Drive offers short, level circuits close to home.
