Physiotherapy Services in Abercynon
We run the service from Harrow in north-west London; there is no Abercynon premises to walk into. Sessions take place in your own home, and the clinician assigned to you may be travelling in from elsewhere. We can only confirm a visit once we know your full postcode and which therapists are free when you get in touch.
Abercynon is a former mining community in Rhondda Cynon Taf, set where the River Cynon flows into the Taff. In 1804 Richard Trevithick's steam locomotive completed the world's first railway journey by steam, running from Penydarren in Merthyr Tydfil down to Abercynon.
The village grew around the Glamorganshire Canal, the railway and the Abercynon Colliery. A memorial to Trevithick's journey stands near the old canal basin, and the community remains proud of its industrial past.
The Taff Trail passes through Abercynon on its route between Cardiff and Brecon, following the old tramroad and canal line. Much of it is tarmac or firm gravel, but the valley sides rise steeply on both sides of the village.
Homes are mostly stone and brick terraces built in rows along the hillside, with some post-war housing and newer homes in Carnetown and Ynysboeth. Lots of these terraces are reached by steep front steps, with gardens that climb behind the house.
Abercynon is covered by Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board. People are usually treated at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil or the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant, and we add private physiotherapy at home after they leave.
Abercynon station sits at the junction of the Merthyr and Aberdare lines, with trains to Cardiff. Common goals include walking to the shops on Margaret Street, catching the train or getting back onto the Taff Trail.
Because so many terraces sit on a slope, we often start with the front steps and the climb to the main road, which is usually the biggest barrier to getting out again.
The flatter section of the Taff Trail near the station suits building walking time before people try the longer climb towards Quakers Yard.
