Physiotherapy Services in City of London
The City of London is the historic Square Mile at the centre of the capital. It is a local authority in its own right, run by the City of London Corporation rather than a borough council, and it reaches from Temple and Blackfriars in the west to Aldgate and Tower Hill in the east, and from the Thames up to Smithfield, the Barbican and Moorgate. Most people think of it as offices, but several thousand people live here, many on the Barbican and Golden Lane estates in the north-west corner, on the Middlesex Street estate near Aldgate, and in smaller blocks around Temple, Smithfield and Queenhithe. EC postcodes are shared with neighbouring Islington, Camden, Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Westminster, so please check your postcode rather than relying on the postcode district or the nearest station name.
We do not operate a clinic in the City of London; our physiotherapy appointments are provided in patients' homes. The physiotherapist who visits may live some distance away and travel to you. Whether a visit is possible depends on your exact postcode and on who is available at the time, so please use the postcode checker on this page rather than relying on the name of your street or neighbourhood.
St Bartholomew's Hospital in West Smithfield, usually known as Barts, is run by Barts Health NHS Trust and has stood on the same site for centuries. City residents are also often treated at hospitals in neighbouring boroughs. Home Physio And Rehab is an independent service and is not part of any hospital or of the NHS. Keep your discharge letter and any exercise sheets for the first visit, so your physiotherapist knows what the hospital team advised.
Homes in the City look quite different from most of London. On the Barbican Estate, flats are reached from raised pedestrian walkways known as the highwalks, and the journey from a front door to the street can involve lifts, ramps, stairs and long corridors between podium and ground level. The neighbouring Golden Lane Estate mixes low-rise blocks around courtyards with the tall Great Arthur House. Elsewhere people live in mansion flats, converted warehouses and new apartment buildings with concierge entrances and heavy doors. Your physiotherapist will look at the way you actually get in and out of your building and make that part of the plan from the start.
Getting about the Square Mile brings its own challenges after an operation, a stroke or a fall. Weekday pavements are crowded with commuters, many lanes and alleys are narrow, uneven or cobbled, and some stations involve long passages and escalators. At weekends the streets are often very quiet, which many people find a calmer time to practise walking outdoors again. Typical goals include the walk to the shops on Cheapside or through Leadenhall Market, catching a bus on London Wall, a gentle lap of the Barbican's lakeside or a City churchyard garden, a stretch of the Thames Path, or getting back to the Barbican Library. Your physiotherapist will agree goals with you, practise them where it is safe, and keep adjusting the plan as you improve.
