Cleckheaton is a town in Kirklees, West Yorkshire, at the northern end of the Spen Valley. It was once the centre of the card clothing industry, which made the wire brushes used to prepare wool and cotton for spinning, and old mill buildings still line the valley.
The town centre around Market Street and Bradford Road has shops, cafés and the old town hall, while the Spen Valley Greenway runs south along a former railway line, giving a flat, traffic-free route for walking practice. Cleckheaton's annual folk festival is popular with locals and visitors.
Gomersal, just to the east, is closely linked with the Brontë family, as Charlotte Brontë visited friends here and used the area in her novel Shirley. Oakenshaw and Hunsworth, to the north, have open countryside near the M62.
Housing includes stone terraces, interwar semis and modern estates on the hillsides. Many older residents live in houses with steep stairs, and rehabilitation often focuses on safe stair use and steps.
NHS West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board plans local services, and most Cleckheaton patients are treated at Dewsbury and District Hospital or Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield. Our home physiotherapy continues their recovery.
Goals include walking to the shops, following the greenway or attending the folk festival again.
Cleckheaton's Tuesday and Saturday markets, the bus station on Albion Street and the Memorial Park beside Whitcliffe Road are everyday destinations for many local patients. Oakwell Hall, an Elizabethan manor house with a country park near Birstall, has gentle walks among woods and fields. The town's mills once made the wire card clothing used by textile firms worldwide, and some of the old works have been converted into flats, small businesses and climbing walls.

Reducing the risk of falls and improving safe, confident movement at home and in the community.
