Great Harwood is a town in the borough of Hyndburn in Lancashire, north of Accrington and close to the Ribble Valley. It grew as a weaving town in the nineteenth century, with mills set along its sloping streets.
The Mercer Clock Tower in the Town Square commemorates John Mercer, the self-taught chemist from Great Harwood who discovered the process now called mercerisation, used to strengthen cotton.
The Hyndburn Greenway follows an old railway route out of the town, crossing the Martholme viaduct over the River Calder. Queen Street and the streets around the Town Square hold the main shops and cafés.
Housing is mainly Victorian stone terraces with inter-war semis, post-war estates and some newer homes on former mill land. Steep roads, front steps and narrow stairs are typical.
NHS Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board commissions care. Great Harwood patients are usually treated at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital, and we continue rehabilitation privately at home.
Buses link the town with Accrington, Blackburn and Clitheroe. Typical aims include walking to the Town Square, along Queen Street or out along the Greenway towards the viaduct.
The Greenway is surfaced and almost level, so it suits longer walks once someone can handle the town's slopes.
The Town Square has seating around the clock tower, which makes it a practical early outdoor target with built-in rest points.
St Bartholomew's parish church, the cricket ground and the shops along Blackburn Road are other familiar destinations, and the gentle loop from the Town Square past the clock tower and back along Queen Street gives a simple, repeatable route for measuring weekly progress.
