Heckmondwike is a town in Kirklees in West Yorkshire, part of the Spen Valley between Dewsbury and Cleckheaton. It grew as a centre for blanket and carpet manufacturing in the nineteenth century.
The Green, a large open space at the heart of the town, is surrounded by Victorian buildings, and Market Place holds a regular market. John Curwen, who popularised the tonic sol-fa method of teaching singing, was born here.
The Upper Independent Chapel is a striking local landmark, and the Spen Valley Greenway, a traffic-free path on the old railway, runs nearby towards Cleckheaton and Dewsbury.
Housing is mainly Victorian stone terraces, with inter-war homes, post-war estates and newer developments on the edges. Steep streets and narrow stairs are typical in older homes.
NHS West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board commissions care. Heckmondwike patients are usually treated at Dewsbury and District Hospital or Pinderfields in Wakefield, and we provide private physiotherapy at home after discharge.
Buses link the town with Dewsbury, Huddersfield and Leeds, and Ravensthorpe and Dewsbury are the nearest stations. Common goals include walking to the Green, round Market Place or along the Greenway.
The Spen Valley Greenway is surfaced and almost flat, so it suits a gradual programme of longer walks once someone is stronger.
The Green itself has benches and level paths, which makes it an ideal early outdoor target close to the shops.
Further local targets include the swimming baths at Spenborough, the Co-op and shops on Westgate, and Walkley Bank on the Liversedge side, while the bowling green beside the Green is a popular sociable goal for people who used to play there regularly.
