We run the service from Harrow in north-west London; there is no Newark-on-Trent premises to walk into. Newark-on-Trent is an historic market town on the River Trent in Nottinghamshire, overlooked by the ruins of Newark Castle, where King John died in 1216. The town was a Royalist stronghold in the Civil War, and the National Civil War Centre tells that story. The large cobbled Market Place, surrounded by Georgian buildings, is at the heart of the town.
The cobbles and narrow streets of the centre can be tricky after an operation, so we often practise walking on uneven surfaces. Housing ranges from Georgian and Victorian terraces near the centre to post-war estates in Hawtonville and Bowbridge and large newer developments at Fernwood, Middlebeck and Balderton. We plan around your own home and route.
The castle gardens and the riverside paths by the Trent give pleasant, mostly level walking, and Sconce and Devon Park, with its Civil War earthworks, is a good longer target. Newark Northgate station on the East Coast Main Line has fast trains to London and the north, while Newark Castle station has services to Nottingham and Lincoln.
Newark Hospital, run by Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, provides urgent treatment and outpatient services, with most surgery and inpatient care at King's Mill Hospital near Mansfield. NHS services are planned by the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Integrated Care Board. We visit independently and can carry on from your hospital exercises.
