Stewarton is a town in East Ayrshire, set beside the Annick Water north of Kilmarnock. It is known historically as the bonnet town, as it was a centre for making knitted Scottish bonnets for centuries.
The town centre on Lainshaw Street and Avenue Street holds local shops and cafés, and the Annick Water runs past the old mills and through green spaces. Lainshaw House and its grounds lie on the edge of town.
Stewarton has grown steadily as a commuter town for Glasgow and Kilmarnock, with new housing around the edges. The nearby village of Dunlop gave its name to a well-known Scottish cheese.
Housing includes older stone cottages and terraces near the centre, council-built homes and many modern family estates. Newer homes often have open-plan ground floors, which can help with early mobility.
NHS Ayrshire and Arran and the East Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership provide statutory services. Stewarton patients are usually treated at University Hospital Crosshouse near Kilmarnock, and we continue rehabilitation at home.
Stewarton station is on the Glasgow to Kilmarnock line, and buses run to Kilmarnock and Irvine. Common goals include walking to Lainshaw Street, along the Annick Water or round the local play parks.
The riverside path by the Annick Water is short and mostly level, which suits early walking practice after an operation.
Some newer estates sit on gentle slopes, so we often rehearse inclines and kerbs on the way to the shops.
