Thornaby-on-Tees lies on the south bank of the River Tees, opposite Stockton. It grew around ironworks and shipbuilding in the nineteenth century, and the old village, with its green and church, survives at its southern end. Much of the town was rebuilt in the 1960s, when Thornaby town centre and its surrounding estates were laid out.
Housing is largely post-war council and private estates, with many semis, terraces and bungalows in areas such as Mandale and Lanehouse. Thornaby Village has older houses and cottages, while Teesdale, by the river, has modern apartments and offices on the site of the old works. The town is mostly flat, which helps with walking practice.
The Teesdale riverside paths, and the Tees Barrage a short walk away, give level walking with views across to Stockton. Thornaby town centre and the Thornaby Library area are where most errands happen. Thornaby station has trains to Middlesbrough, Darlington and beyond, which makes longer trips possible.
Hospital care is provided at the University Hospital of North Tees in Stockton, run by North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, and at the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. NHS North East and North Cumbria plans services for the area. We visit independently and support your recovery at home.
Thornaby airfield, once an RAF station, lay on the edge of the town, and parts of the Thornaby Road and Ingleby Barwick estates now cover the site. Ingleby Barwick, to the south, became one of the largest private housing estates in Europe, with many family homes on gently sloping roads. The Tees Heritage Park, following the river towards Yarm, offers longer walks for later stages.
