Physiotherapy Services in Thurso
We run the service from Harrow in north-west London; there is no Thurso premises to walk into. Sessions take place in your own home, and the clinician assigned to you may be travelling in from elsewhere. We can only confirm a visit once we know your full postcode and which therapists are free when you get in touch.
Thurso is the most northerly town on the British mainland, looking across the Pentland Firth towards the cliffs of Hoy. It was laid out on a planned grid in the late eighteenth century by Sir John Sinclair of Ulbster, the agricultural improver, and the straight streets of sandstone houses between Traill Street and the river still reflect that design.
The ruined Old St Peter’s Kirk stands near the harbour mouth, and the reef break at Thurso East draws surfers from all over the world for its cold, powerful winter waves. Along the bay, the promenade gives a flat seafront walk, while the riverside path heading upstream past the Victorian Thurso Castle ruin is quieter and more sheltered when a northerly wind is blowing.
Scrabster harbour, just round the bay, is where the NorthLink ferry leaves for Stromness on Orkney, and the decommissioning of the Dounreay nuclear site to the west has been a major local employer for decades. Thurso station sits on the Far North Line, with slow but scenic trains to Inverness, and the A9 is the long road south.
NHS Highland runs health services across Caithness. Planned surgery such as hip and knee replacement usually happens at Raigmore in Inverness, a long journey away, while Caithness General in Wick and the small Dunbar community hospital in Thurso cover more local needs. Our private home visits are designed to sit alongside whatever local follow-up a patient already has.
Because the journey south for appointments is so long, many families value rehabilitation that comes to the house. Practical goals tend to be about wind, weather and slopes: getting along the promenade on a breezy day, coping with the hill up from Scrabster, or getting back to the shops on Traill Street and Rotterdam Street.
