Physiotherapy Services in Wick
We run the service from Harrow in north-west London; there is no Wick premises to walk into. Sessions take place in your own home, and the clinician assigned to you may be travelling in from elsewhere. We can only confirm a visit once we know your full postcode and which therapists are free when you get in touch.
Wick, on the east coast of Caithness, was once the busiest herring port in Europe. In the nineteenth century, thousands of boats crowded the harbour every summer and the quays were packed with gutters and coopers. Pulteneytown, the planned settlement south of the river, was laid out by the engineer Thomas Telford for the British Fisheries Society.
The herring boom is long gone, but its story is told in the Wick Heritage Centre, and the Old Pulteney distillery still produces whisky in the town. Ebenezer Place, a single building with one door, holds the record as the shortest street in the world. On the cliffs south of the town, the ruined Castle of Old Wick is one of the oldest castles in Scotland.
The Wick River divides the town, with a pleasant path along both banks and bridges joining the older centre on the north bank to Pulteneytown on the south. Wick is the terminus of the Far North Line from Inverness and has a small airport. Houses range from stone fishermen’s cottages to council estates and modern bungalows on the edges.
NHS Highland runs health services, with Caithness General Hospital based in Wick itself. Some planned surgery happens in Inverness, a long journey south, so many patients come home needing continued rehabilitation. Our private physiotherapy at home is planned to fit with local follow-up.
Typical goals include walking along the riverside, getting to the shops on High Street, visiting the harbour or managing the steep streets in Pulteneytown. Weather plays a big part, so we also think about footwear and walking aids for wet and windy days.
