Physiotherapy Services in Whickham
We run the service from Harrow in north-west London; there is no Whickham premises to walk into. Sessions take place in your own home, and the clinician assigned to you may be travelling in from elsewhere. We can only confirm a visit once we know your full postcode and which therapists are free when you get in touch.
Whickham is a hilltop town in Gateshead, looking down over the Derwent valley and the Tyne. Once a village surrounded by coal pits, it has grown into a popular residential area while keeping its old Front Street, with its shops, pubs and church. The MetroCentre, one of the largest shopping centres in the UK, lies just below at Dunston.
The Derwent Walk Country Park follows the former Derwent Valley Railway, with level, traffic-free paths and the Nine Arches viaduct over the river. Gibside, the National Trust estate with its chapel and long avenue, is close by. Chase Park, near Front Street, offers shorter level walks and benches.
Whickham is hilly, with steep roads leading down to Swalwell and the river. Housing ranges from older terraces and cottages to large inter-war and post-war estates and newer homes on the edges. Buses link the town with Newcastle, Gateshead and the MetroCentre.
North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board plans NHS services, and most Whickham residents are treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead. Our private home physiotherapy picks up after discharge.
Many patients want to get back to Front Street, Chase Park or the Derwent Walk. Hills are part of daily life, so we focus on slopes and stamina as well as stairs and getting in and out of the car.
Whickham Thorns, a former colliery site turned into a green space with an outdoor activity centre, has wide grassy tracks above Dunston, and the long gravelled avenue at Gibside leading to the Column to Liberty is broad and even. St Mary’s Church, with its old tower above the village, remains a focal point for many long-standing families.
